XB400P Pump Head

This pump is used on all Studio Star model casting machines
that feature externally mounted pumps. These models include the
EX4, CT425M,
CT630,
CT630M,
CT840, SD75, SD125 and several other designs.

XB400P
EXTERNAL MOUNT PUMP ASSEMBLY
The XB400P has been specifically designed to pump slip with
maximum efficiency from an external mount system. Due to the fact
that slip is exposed to the shaft and bearing surfaces, there is no way
to totally eliminate frictional wear of some parts. Slip is one of the
most abrasive liquids and we simply have to take some preventative measures
to keep the wear to a minimum.
During assembly, each new XB400P is test run to insure that the alignment
of all parts and the packing tension is as perfect as possible.
True alignment and packing tension greatly extends pump life.
Once the pump is put into service a short break-in period begins. It
is possible that the packings (PL2) that are located inside the throat
of the housing (LP44) may need to be adjusted. Even as slight wear
begins a drop of slip may seep out from around the shaft and drip from
the end of the packing retainer (LP33). If this occurs, simply tighten
the tension on the packings (LP2) by adjusting the packing retainer screws
(LP1). Even a quarter inward turn of the screw can add enough pressure
to seat the packings properly. Do not over tighten the packings.
With each new XB400P we provide an extra set of packings (LP2)
and an extra housing bushing (LP55). These parts are to be used
as replacements to extend the life of the pump as long as possible.
As pump usage continues the parts will wear and further packing adjustment
may be required. Eventually, the new bushing (LP55) and packings
(LP2) can be installed.
Use an 1/8" alien wrench to loosen the set screws on the flexible
coupling (2X497) and the set collar (LP13). Next, loosen the tension
on the packings by adjusting the packing retainers screws (LP1) outward.
Then, remove the suction cover (LP88) and the shaft and impeller (LP66)
can be removed by pulling it out. This exposes the inside of the
housing (LP44) and the bronze bushing (LP55). Remove the bronze bushing
from its slightly pressed-in position and insert the new one. Then, reassemble
the pump using the reverse order.
Once the pump is assembled with the new parts in their proper places
it will provide many hours of additional service. Eventually, as
the slip wears the pump shaft and the bushings, it will get to the point
that they can no longer be rebuilt. At this point the pump has reached
its total useful life and will have to be replaced.
Our experiences with the XB400P type external pumps indicate that
the normal life expectancy is about 1600 hours. However, each situation
is different and wear is impacted by the type of slip it's pumping and
by how the pump is being maintained. Periodic maintenance is
the most important factor to extend life.
Refer to the list below to order replacement parts. Our normal
business hours are from 8 until 5 (CST) on Monday through Thursday.
Parts orders must be placed prior to noon so we have time to ship them
the same day. There is no factory production on Fridays, but our
office staff may be in to take your call or leave a message.
